Running IPv6 on the iPhone

ipv6wifiOk, now I update my iphone to iOS 6.1 and thought I should have IPv6 connectivity without much of a hassle.

Now, the iOS 6.1 feature guide does not mention anything about IPv6 support. (iOS new features). All fancy, eye candy stuff alright, but nothing about IPv6… nada…nowhere…

I thought I’d test it out to see if iOS 6.1 can work with IPv6. I setup my home router (already running IPv6 with my ISP on dual-stack) to hand out IPv6 addresses using EU-64 format. Connect the phone to wifi and navigate to network settings::: Apparently, the network settings only show IPv4 details:

v6_1All other devices on my network now has got an IPv6 address leased by the router. So I thought I’d test my phone can reach IPv6 sites http://test-ipv6.com/
v6_2

… and viola … So it seems that iOS 6.1 fully support IPv6 connectivity. I get a 10/10 on the IPv6 test. Dont know why Apple doesn’t show IPv6 address details on the network settings,  it also wouldnt let you change anything related to IPv6 at all..

and then … if you want to check address details,  there is a small App called “ip6Config” from AppStore. :) that’s about it.

As far as i know the iphone already supports IPv6 on the wifi interface for a long time. Now we will have to wait for IPv6 support on the mobile interface, as there there is no ipv6 support to be found yet. Luckily the IPv6 support on the wifi interface shows that the ipv6 stack and applications are there and working.
